The Bengal Tiger in Corbett

The Bengal tiger is the animal that made Corbett famous. It is also the one nobody can promise you.

A solitary hunter

Tigers are solitary and territorial, often active around dawn and dusk, and use forest cover extremely well. Many safaris pass through tiger territory without a sighting; pug marks, alarm calls of deer and langurs and fresh scratch marks are part of the reading the guide does for you.

Where people look

Grasslands, waterholes, riverbanks and forest roads are typical places. Zones differ in landscape and season, so it helps to choose with an eye to your dates.

Improving your odds honestly

  • Book more than one safari, ideally in different zones or shifts.
  • Follow your guide's lead on when to wait and when to move on.
  • Stay quiet and still when animals are near.
  • Accept that a good safari is more than one animal.

What we will not say

We will not tell you a zone is guaranteed for tigers. We do not publish tiger counts that we cannot source.

Frequently asked questions

Will I see a tiger?

We cannot promise it. Many visitors do not see one on a first safari, and many enjoy the trip anyway.
